Friday Fix-Ups: Mantels Part 2

Traditional  holiday folklore says that ones stocking needs to be hung by the mantel with care – but what if you don’t have one? This was a concerning thought for me when I was little. I’ve rounded up some  alternatives if you don’t have a fireplace.

Hang it 1, Stairs: Although this idea is still limiting to people who have a second floor it does display the stockings nicely.

Hang it 2, Branch: Hang the decoreations on a large branch with many limbs to get a great holiday decoration piece for your wall. Spray paint it silver with glitter for some extra bling. I Love this idea even more if you don’t have a tree. Bring some nature into you house.

Hang it 3, Ladder: This handy contraption may be out from your attempt to decorate your front yard – instead of putting it away prop it up in your living room and make it part of your decor.  This way it will it’s looks like you meant to leave the ladder out instead of forgetting to put it away.

Hang it – no – Place it 4, Boots: Collect all the bright wellies from your family and stack them by the door or tree. This is such cute modernized St. Nicholas tradition.

Where will you be hanging your stockings, my dears? Who still needs to find trinckets to fill them with? … I do!!!

Friday Fix-Up: Mantels Part 1

Every room should have a focal point. In large public rooms like living  or dens (maybe only a midwest thing) it tends to become the television.  In my opinion – they are not esthetically pleasing and a general conversation suck if it’s on.  A fireplace- more so mantel is a great way to pull focus in your space, is an amazing way to show off treasures and can be changed easily through season or decor ADD.  With the invention of indoor heat  a lot of fireplaces have gone the extinction route leaving bare spaces begging for attention.  So I say Fake it!

Fake it 1, Wood stacking: Bravo Laura for the fiercely creative use of space and material. This was a weekend project! How-to found over on Apartment Therapy.

Fake it 2, Mantel Frame: New or vintage, heated or not a mantel frame is a great way to add some architectural detail. True, this one is a little pricier but is a great investment for your decor. Your local scrapyard might be the key place to collect a great vintage find.  Click here to see how House and Home Canada did it.

Fake it 3, Shelve it: This idea can be a little trickier  because of the lack of side panels connecting the mantel to the floor. I have a few suggestions: Frame it out and put tile or wall paper in the middle with some vases along the floor. If you have a space heater put a an elaborate fire screen in front. Or a small side table  that sits in between the side chairs. You can make it work! Check out how Decor Chick and Willow Decor did theirs.

There are so many possibilities.  Decide on what your room to feel like- rustic, chic, classic? This piece will really steer you into that theme- it is the focal point.

Friday Fix-Up: Entryway part 2

Tis the season to add a little glimmer and shine to your decor. Ones entryway can be easily transformed into a festive center piece of your room with a few quick changes.

Gather  amazing glass vases of all shapes and sizes and fill  them with colorful ornaments, pine cones or moss in varying combinations. Bring  a touch of the outdoors in with branches either all natural or spray paint a color.

This is a great transformation from everyday to holiday. Simple, light and clutter free. What will you do with your holiday decor?

Friday Fix-Up: Entryways Part 1

Everyone needs a place to keep their keys and contain the mail. A quick stop by the door to check your face as you fly out the door.

The mixture of the rustic sideboard (with plenty of storage) and shiny round lamp is a great mixture of textures and shapes. Also adding a touch of color with the matte blue vase and yellow tray to keep all the letters gives you a sophisticated, well maintained spot to keep all the things you need at a moments notice.  Personally- the owl key hook is the frosting on the cake. Always give a sentimental touch.
